Eyebrow Aesthetics (Brow Lifting)

What is Eyebrow Lift?

With the development of techniques in cosmetic surgery, eyebrow lift (browlift, cat/fox/bella eyes) surgery is performed to treat wrinkles around the eyes and sagging eyebrows. In this regard, we must first have information about the "ideal eyebrow" in terms of aesthetics. The starting point on the inside of the eyebrows should be at the projection of the line connecting the wings of the nose with the inner corner of the eye and approximately 1 cm above the inner corner of the eye. The eyebrows should curve outwards from the midline and their outer ends should be 10-20° upward. Until the 2000s, the highest point of the eyebrows was on the vertical line drawn tangent to the outer edge of the pupil, but today, this line moves outwards and passes through the outer angle of the eye. The distance between the eyelid crease and the eyebrow is approximately 16 mm. The downward displacement of the tissues here due to genetics, behavioral or aging causes sagging eyebrows.

What procedures are used in eyebrow lifting?

We use neurotoxins, dermal fillers, thread suspensions and some surgical techniques (Direct Eyebrow lift, Endoscopic Eyebrow lift, Temporal lift-Temple lift as the common name of Fox/Bella/Cat eyes procedures).

Eyebrow lift with neurotoxins

With the application of a few units of neurotoxin, the function of the eye muscles will temporarily decrease and the eyebrows will rise upward as the muscles that lift the eyebrows are activated. However, this situation is temporary and lasts for 5-6 months. This procedure takes 3-5 minutes and can be performed in the doctor's office. When performing this inexpensive procedure, attention should be paid to the position, shape and symmetry of the eyebrows.

Eyebrow lift with threads

The threads used in eyebrow lifting are of two classes: meltable(temporary) and non-fusible (permanent). With the meltable ones, eyebrow lifting can be achieved that will last for a maximum of 3-6 months. This procedure takes 20-30 minutes in the doctor's office with regional anesthesia. Thus, the eyebrows will rise upward and outward. However, this height of the eyebrows is temporary and the eyebrows will return to their previous state as the threads melt. On the other hand, when this procedure is performed with non-melting silicone threads, the height of the eyebrows will be achieved for at least 3-4 years. However, it is necessary to share with the patient that these threads are permanent under the skin, just like breast prostheses. Since these brands, known as Springthread and Infinitythread, are imported from France and Belgium.

Eyebrow lift with surgical techniques

It is possible to lift eyebrows using various surgical techniques. The most commonly used of these techniques are brow lift combined with endoscopic forehead lift and temple lift (temporal lift). It is popularly known as Fox/Cat/Bella eyes. In this technique, especially the middle and outer parts of the eyebrows are lifted in an upward-outward direction through a 3-4 cm skin incision through the scalp in the temple area. The surgery, performed under sterile operating room conditions, takes approximately 1-1.5 hours. Intravenous sedation anesthesia provides comfort. There may be risks such as temporary loss of sensation in the incision area and limited hair loss (alopecia). Although the permanence of surgical eyebrow lifting is lifelong, a period of 10 years can be predicted. While performing these procedures, pre-operative photographs of the patient are taken and the position, shape and symmetry of the eyebrows are taken into consideration and the amount of lifting will be evaluated together with the patient. The cost is more expensive than other methods. In addition, direct eyebrow lifting can also be performed, especially in people with excess skin on the eyebrow and many wrinkles. Here, with good planning, the skin is removed as previously determined with an incision made over the eyebrow so that the height of both eyebrows is symmetrical, and then the eyebrows are lifted by suturing. This procedure takes 30-45 minutes under clinical conditions with local anesthesia.
